Fourteen steel shipping containers are set to be used to 'maximise opportunities' for the Commonwealth Games in Perry Barr - with four big screens showing sports events and movies. Other features include tables for people to sit and watch the big screens and parking spaces for 10 vehicles and 16 bicycles.

It is all part of unique plans to create a shipping container park that will eventually see nearly 90 steel containers being used for leisure and commercial purposes. It will be created in Galey Park, Walsall Road, on land which would originally have been used for the scrapped Athletes' Village.

The 14 containers will be erected in phase 1 before the Games, which take place in July and August, with a further 72 installed after the prestigious event. The containers would be 30ft or 40ft with linked units available to create larger offerings, stacked as single or double-storey units.

The entire site will be in operation for a period of seven years. A children’s playground will also feature in phase 2, as would a marketing suite and an external stage with a maximum capacity of 1,500 people.

Although the container park is not part of the official Commonwealth Games infrastructure, its proximity to Alexander Stadium, which is just over a mile down Walsall Road, indicates that there could be some collaboration.

The container park will eventually be replaced by permanent housing. That is part of a bigger Perry Barr 2040 Masterplan, which will see £700 million spent on thousands of new homes and the wider regeneration of the local area. The scheme has already created 512 jobs, smashing its original target of 400.

Plans for a Commonwealth Games athletes’ village in newly built Perry Barr accommodation were scrapped in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic. Temporary tent and box structures have also now been approved at the University of Birmingham ’s The Vale student village in Edgbaston and at Warwick University as well as the NEC for the duration of the games.

Birmingham City Council Planning Committee will meet on Thursday, April 7 to discuss the plans.
