The video game investment market has seen seismic changes so far in 2022 advancing the expansion of interest and financial support for the market.

While the numbers of 2022 don’t match with the exponential growth seen recently early on in the pandemic, the gaming industry continues to show promising results as spending models change and opportunities expand.

Experts agree however that investors should be excited to see how far gaming investments have come and how vital it has been for the market to gain an increased level of appreciation throughout the pandemic years.

Here the Investing News Network (INN) offers investors a closer look at the progress for gaming investments in 2022.

After a monumental increase in gaming investments since the start of the pandemic, there had been concerns about a decline in considering a “return to normal” effect.

“We seem to be out the other side of COVID,” Grant Johnson, chairman and CEO of Esports Entertainment Group (NASDAQ:GMBL), told INN.

Despite the “radical growth” seen throughout the early days of the pandemic for gaming, there has now been a demonstrable downturn in spending.

Researcher Digital Development Management (DDM) shared a dataset earlier this year, reported by GamesIndustry.Biz, indicating the Q1 period of 2022 saw a 10.3 percent decline in the number of investment deals.

In total the amount of investment in the space reached US$3.5 billion for the Q1 period.

However Johnson said investors need to keep the bigger picture in check. “The total numbers are still substantially higher than they were pre pandemic,” he said. “I think all the markers are still pointing at growth.”

For his part Nick Mersch, a financial expert with Purpose Investments, told INN he views gaming as a ubiquitous hub in the lives of millions of consumers. Which in turn will result in ongoing spending.

He credits the recent uptick in investment helping change the image of the industry, resulting in an ongoing show of support now that the industry isn’t seeing an exponential rush.

“It's really been a removal of the social stigma of gaming towards the socialization aspect,” Mersch said, referring to the social aspect accompanying modern games.

For the market though there is a challenge in the amount users, whether old or new, are willing to spend in gaming options now that competing opportunities outside of the gaming room are more widely available.

“People are coming back to the drawing board in terms of how much they can spend on these games, discretionary spending is pulled back,” he said. “And that's why you're seeing a bunch of these stocks really just come off with the rest of the market.”

While total investment was down, M&A still showed another strong period as acquisition strategies in the gaming industry continued.

The DDM report indicated M&A transactions reached US$8 billion, which represents a 276.2 percent uptick over the previous year.

The acquisitions accounted for did not include the big brand name ones announced so far this year, as they haven’t officially closed yet.

These deals include Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) planned deal for Activision Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ:TTWO) purchase of mobile developer Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) and finally the private acquisition of Bungie by Sony (NYSE:SONY).

Sony and Microsoft have continued to struggle to get out of the mud of supply chain issues affecting the availability of their consoles – the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S.

In 2022 the results have improved and more gamers have been able to find these consoles, which were originally launched at the end of 2020.

GamesIndustry.Biz reported 20 million PS5s had been sold across the world.

"To those fans who have yet to get their hands on a console, please know that we are planning on a significant ramp-up in PS5 production this year and we are working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants one," Veronica Rogers, SVP and head of global sales and business operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said.

In a recent update to shareholders, Microsoft disclosed revenue for its gaming division during the fiscal 2022 Q4 period, which ended in June 2022, had dropped about seven percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

However, the decline still shows sales of US$3.45 billion, making it its second best Q4 period ever. The annual revenue resulted in US$16.22 billion, which according to analysts means the best output from Xbox ever.

Mersch celebrated the turn for Microsoft, and recently Sony, to prioritize subscription-based revenue models incentivizing gamers to pay a monthly fee for access to a pool of games.

The financial expert said, despite the prevalence of games with communities dedicated to them, these subscription models play well with “the general nature of video games,” in which a player checks out a new game for a while and then most likely moves onto a different one.

“As soon as you introduce recurring revenue into a system, it's much more predictable on a year to year basis,” Mersch said. “And it's usually much higher gross margin, which investors love.”

The gaming market represents a challenging landscape for investors to feel certain about its future. While the reality is settling in about the excess spending days of 2020, experts agree enthusiasm should be present in the outlook for what gaming investments will represent.

The digital hobby is not going away and the market will continue to engage with its growth in 2022 and beyond.
